Jeremiah 38:17–18 (HCSB)
“Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: If indeed you surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then you will live… But if you do not surrender… this city will be handed over… and you yourself will not escape.’”
Zedekiah sat face to face with the truth. Not rumors. Not secondhand warnings. The word of the Lord, delivered plainly. The outcome was already set – The King of Babylon was coming. The only question left was how he would respond. Surrender meant life. Resistance meant ruin.
But surrender felt like defeat. It looked like weakness. It meant trusting God’s word over his own instincts, his own advisors, his own fear of man. And that is where he faltered. Zedekiah did not reject the message because it was unclear. He rejected it because it was costly. It required trusting in God's Word.
We do the same. There are moments when God makes the path forward unmistakable but everything in us resists, because surrender feels like losing control. We look for another option, another voice, another way out that lets us keep what we want.
But there are times when judgment is already at the door – not because God is cruel, but because consequences have matured. In those moments, surrender is not defeat. It is mercy. It is the only path that leads to life instead of destruction.
Zedekiah feared men more than he trusted God. And it cost him everything.
And another thing; the King of Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar, installed Zedekiah. (Look it up here; 2 Chonicles 36.10 Do not trust what the World gives you wether it be title, fame or fortune. This is not your home.
There is a King who is coming – not from Babylon, but Christ Jesus the King of all. His call is the same in principle: surrender. Not to destruction, but to salvation. Not death but life. Lay down your resistance. Yield your will. Trust His word, even when it confronts you.
Refusal does not stop what is coming. It only determines how you will meet it. Meet the coming King right now, for destruction is coming, but so is eternal life.
Pray:
Lord, give me the humility to surrender when You speak. Strip away my fear, my pride, and my need to control outcomes. Teach me to trust Your word over my instincts. Let me yield to You now, so that I may live. I ask it in Jesus' name, amen.
