When Darkness Feels Endless: Waiting for the Dawn

“Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.” –Psalm 30:5 (HCSB)
There are nights of the soul that seem like they will never end. Seasons where every day feels like dusk, and the light you once walked in feels a million miles away. Depression. Grief. Fear. Trauma. These are dark roads, and they make us wonder, Will morning ever come again?
God never denies the night. He doesn’t shame your tears or rush you through your sorrow. But He does promise that night doesn’t last forever. And while you wait for the dawn, He sits with you in the dark.
David wrote many of his Psalms in the valleys. “Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). Jeremiah wept over Jerusalem, crying, “My eyes overflow with tears, for there is no one nearby to comfort me, no one to restore my life” (Lamentations 1:16). Even Jesus, in His agony, prayed, “My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with Me” (Matthew 26:38).
If you find yourself in a dark night, you’re in the company of saints. And you’re not forgotten.
The light may feel far off, but the truth is: the Lord is near to the brokenhearted. And He’s not just waiting at the end of your suffering—He’s walking through it with you.
There will be a sunrise. It may come slowly, one beam of grace at a time. But it will come. And on the other side of this night is a God who never stopped loving you.
Prayer: A Prayer for the Night Season Father, I can’t see the way forward. Everything feels clouded by sorrow. But I trust that You are still here, even in the dark. Give me enough light for the next step. Remind me that weeping may endure for the night—but it is not the end of the story. Hold me until morning comes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
