"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline." — 2 Timothy 1:7
Timothy didn’t fit the mold of a bold leader. He was young, often sick, and apparently prone to fear and insecurity. Paul had to remind him not to let others look down on him because of his youth and encouraged him to stir up the gift within him. Timothy had been raised in the faith by his mother and grandmother, and Paul became a spiritual father to him—mentoring him, traveling with him, and eventually entrusting him to lead the church in Ephesus. That wasn’t a small assignment. The city was hostile, the culture intimidating, and the church itself needed strong leadership. But Paul didn’t doubt Timothy. He saw something deeper: a sincere heart and a calling from God.
Timothy probably didn’t feel ready. His fears were real, and the pressures were heavy. But Paul reminded him: “God didn’t give you a spirit of fear.” What God had given was far better—power, love, and self-discipline. The kind of Spirit that enables a man to stand up even when he feels small. And stand, Timothy did. Through hardship, through opposition, and through seasons of doubt, he remained faithful. His life reminds us that courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes, it whispers through trembling obedience.
God doesn’t just call the bold—He equips the hesitant. He meets the fearful with power. He surrounds the insecure with grace. And He uses people who feel small to carry out work that is eternal. Like Timothy, we may feel outmatched by the weight of what God has asked of us. But we aren’t called to walk in our own strength—we walk in His Spirit.
If fear has been holding you back, remember Timothy. God isn’t looking for bravado—He’s looking for surrender. What He started in you, He will equip you to finish. Let fear fall and faith rise. You are trusted by God, and He has given you everything you need.
Prayer: Father, thank You for calling me even when I feel weak and unqualified. Replace my fear with faith. Help me to walk in the power, love, and discipline Your Spirit provides. Like Timothy, I want to be faithful, even if I feel unsure. Strengthen me for the work You've given me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
