Day 21: TheMaster

“A disciple is not above his teacher, or a slave above his master.” – Matthew 10:24 (HCSB)

In this simple yet weighty statement, Jesus refers to Himself as Master (kyrios), a term that signifies authority, ownership, and relational leadership. As disciples, we are not His equals—we are His followers, learners, servants. The term “master” was used in both social and spiritual contexts in the ancient world. In Jesus’ case, it denotes not only rank, but the right to command and shape the lives of those who belong to Him.

This title appears throughout Matthew’s Gospel. In Matthew 23:10, Jesus says, “You have one Master, the Messiah.” In Matthew 6:24, He warns that “no one can be a slave of two masters,” pressing the point that our ultimate loyalty can belong to only one. In Matthew 8:19, a scribe approaches Him saying, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go”—and the word for “teacher” there overlaps with the idea of “master,” one who leads by both knowledge and authority.

Jesus is not a distant taskmaster but a present, guiding Lord. His commands are not harsh—they are holy. His leadership is not selfish—it is sacrificial. To call Him Master is not to fear domination, but to willingly submit to the One who leads in love and truth. A good master cares for his servants, teaches them what is right, and rewards their faithfulness.

When you call Jesus Master, you acknowledge that your life is not your own. You have been bought with a price. You are under His authority and walking in His steps. His yoke is easy, His burden is light, and His service is perfect freedom.

Prayer: Master and Lord, I lay down my rights and follow You. Teach me to obey not out of fear, but out of love. Shape my heart through submission, train my hands for service, and lead my life by Your truth. You are worthy of my full allegiance. Amen.

Keep it in mind today as you walk in His love and share His grace!
