The return of the unclean spirit
The return of the unclean spirit in Matthew 12 is one of the more sobering warnings Jesus ever gave. The point is not merely a teaching aspect of demonology – it is emptiness and progressive intensity of darkness through demonic occupation and influence itrue transformation.
Doing the spiritual without being spiritual is anti-spiritual. And by spiritual I mean walking in vital (life-giving) union with Christ. You must be born again.
Jesus says:
“When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it roams through waterless places looking for rest but doesn’t find any. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And returning, it finds the house vacant, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result, that man’s last condition is worse than the first.” – Matthew 12:43–45
The “house” is the man. The spirit calls him “my house.” That alone is chilling. Sin and uncleanness do not view people as sacred image-bearers – they view them as habitation. Christ sees a sheep to rescue. Darkness sees real estate to occupy.
The “why” of the return is connected to vacancy.
The house is cleaned but unfilled. It’s ordered but unoccupied. Reformed externally but not inhabited by God. Moral sweeping occurred. Spiritual indwelling did not. This is the danger of mere religion, temporary conviction, emotional experiences, behavior modification, or surface repentance. A man can stop cursing, stop drinking, stop lusting, stop rage, clean his language, organize his life, (But not really, sin requires God’s intervention.) and still remain spiritually empty. Hell is not ultimately threatened by tidiness. It is threatened by union with Christ.
The “how” is progressive.
Evil rarely returns announcing itself with horns and catastrophe. It returns through familiarity, memory, appetite, and unguarded ground. The spirit finds the place “swept and put in order.” Nothing is resisting it. No occupying presence. No warfare. No filling of the Spirit. No truth enthroned in the inner man. The vacuum becomes an invitation.
That is why Scripture repeatedly connects sanctification not merely with removal but with replacement. Put off – put on. Die – and rise. Crucify – and walk in the Spirit. The kingdom of God is not spiritual extermination leaving bare walls behind. It is divine occupation.
The implications are immense.
First, neutrality is a myth. Jesus immediately says elsewhere in the same chapter:
“The one who is not with Me is against Me.”
– Matthew 12:30
The soul does not remain spiritually vacant forever. Something rules. Something fills. Something shapes desire, thought, affection, and will.
Second, relapse can become deeper bondage.
The final state becomes “worse than the first.” Sin hardens. Repeated exposure to truth without surrender increases accountability. A man who toys with deliverance, conviction, or repentance while resisting Christ often becomes more difficult, cynical, and enslaved afterward. The conscience calcifies. Light rejected becomes darkness intensified.
Third, this passage has corporate implications too.
Jesus ends by saying:
“That’s how it will also be with this evil generation.”
– Matthew 12:45
Israel had experienced reform movements, religious cleansing, and external order, yet rejected the Messiah Himself standing in front of them. The nation became “swept” religiously but refused the true King. Empty religion became a prepared house for deeper blindness. Israel was essentially wiped off the map in 70A.D. by the Romans after they rejected their Messiah. Jesus predicted it too.
There is also an implication for modern people too.
The answer to the returning spirit is not more sweeping. It is being born again.
Not merely “stop sinning,” but:
Accept the gift of God’s grace in Christ Jesus then,
Abide in Christ,,
Saturate the mind with truth,
Walk in obedience by the Power of the Holy Spirit,
Remain among the people of God,
Keep short accounts with sin.
The New Testament vision of the believer is not an empty house with locked doors. It is a temple inhabited by the Spirit of God. Trust Christ today!
