The Image of The Invisible God

Colossians 1:15

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.”

Jesus is not just a reflection of God—He is the exact image, the perfect revelation of the invisible God. In calling Him the image, Paul uses the Greek word eikōn, which means exact likeness or visible manifestation. This title proclaims that in Christ, the God whom no one has seen is now fully known. Where the Old Testament gave glimpses of God’s glory through fire, cloud, or angelic messenger, Jesus makes the fullness of God known in flesh and blood.

This echoes the deep longing of Moses who asked, “Show me Your glory” (Ex. 33:18). In Jesus, that prayer is answered. He is not merely a prophet or priest; He is the manifestation of God’s own nature. Hebrews 1:3 affirms the same truth: Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of His being. To look upon Christ is to see the compassion, holiness, wisdom, and justice of the eternal God revealed without distortion.

As the image of God, Jesus restores the likeness that was marred in humanity by sin. Adam was made in God’s image but defiled it through rebellion. Christ, the true image, restores what was lost and becomes the model for the new creation. When we look to Jesus, we see not only who God is, but who we are meant to be in Him. He is the template of redeemed humanity and the One who reshapes us into the image of His glory.
