The Heir

“But when the tenant farmers saw the son, they said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance!’” – Matthew 21:38 (HCSB)

In the parable of the vineyard, Jesus tells of a landowner who sends his son to collect fruit from tenants. The tenants, recognizing the son as the heir, plot to kill him and claim what is not theirs. This chilling moment exposes the deep rejection Jesus faced—but also unveils His divine identity: He is the Heir, the rightful possessor of all that belongs to the Father.

This is more than a parable—it’s prophecy. The tenants represent Israel’s religious leaders who rejected the prophets and would soon reject the Son. In Hebrews 1:2, we are told that God “has appointed [Jesus] heir of all things.” And in Romans 8:17, Paul says that through Christ, we too become “heirs of God and coheirs with Christ.” But He alone is the primary Heir—the one who inherits the kingdom, the throne, and the nations.

Jesus, as the Heir, holds the full authority and legacy of the Father. The vineyard is His. The kingdom is His. And though the tenants rejected Him, the resurrection confirmed that their scheme failed—He still reigns. The stone the builders rejected became the cornerstone (Matthew 21:42).

To call on Jesus as Heir is to bow to the one true Son who has the right to rule. It is to trust that the inheritance is secure in Him and that, through Him, you are no longer an outsider—you are part of the family and a sharer in the promise.

Prayer: Heir of all things, I honor You as the rightful Son and sovereign Lord. What the world tried to steal, You reclaimed by grace and power. Thank You for welcoming me into Your inheritance. Let me live today as one who belongs to You, with loyalty, trust, and joy. Amen.

Keep it in mind today as you walk in His love and share His grace!
