The Galatian Interrogation

Galatians 3:1-3 (HCSB)"You foolish Galatians! Who has hypnotized you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was vividly portrayed as crucified? 2 I only want to learn this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now going to be made complete by the flesh?"

The Opening: Like a detective with a suspect, Paul calls out the insanity of trying to move back to the sandbox of self-improvement through several probing questions. If your new life was given by the Spirit of God, why do you think your own "fleshy" performance is what is going to maintain your salvation or finish God’s work in you? If you could do it, there would be no need for a savior.

  • Grammatical Note: Paul contrasts "beginning" (enarchomai) with "made complete" (epiteleō). Begin with the Spirit, finish with the flesh, doesn’t make any sense.

  • Historical Context: In Greek religious rites, these were technical terms for the start and the finish of a sacred ceremony. Paul is mocking the idea that God would provide a divine "Start" but require a human "Finish."

  • Linguistic Note: The "Flesh" (sarx) here isn't just "sin"; it’s the "human-self" trying to achieve standing through its own power.

The Reality: You are not a "work in progress" regarding your acceptance with God. You are His. You began in the Spirit. You are sustained by the Spirit. You will be completed by the Spirit. Anything else is sand. Stand on the Word. “Therefore, no condemnation now exists for those in Christ Jesus, because the Spirit’s law of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. What the law could not do since it was limited by the flesh, God did. (Romans 8.1-3)

Resolve to Rest in the Spirit’s work. Today, when the tribal pull of "approval" tries to get you to measure your worth by your output, remind yourself of the Forensic interrogation.

Lord, I reject the shifting sands of approval-seeking. I rest in you today. Keep me focused on you and the work you finished on our behalf and to your glory. I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
