“...where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” — Hebrews 6:20
The Greek word for "forerunner" is prodromos, a nautical term used for a small boat that would carry a ship's anchor through the breakers and into the harbor when the weather was too dangerous for the main vessel. While the ship was still battling the waves outside the harbor walls, the anchor was already dropped in the calm, protected waters inside. Because the anchor was secure in the harbor, the ship’s arrival was no longer a matter of chance, but a guaranteed certainty.
Jesus has acted as our prodromos. He has ascended into the heavenly sanctuary, the true harbor, and has secured our anchor in the very presence of God. This means that while we are still navigating the storms and choppy waters of this life, our soul is already tethered to the calm of the next. We are not "trying" to make it to heaven; we are being pulled toward a destination where our anchor is already firmly planted.
The security of the believer does not depend on the strength of their own navigation or their ability to stay afloat through their own merit. Our safety is entirely dependent on the fact that our Forerunner has entered the sanctuary on our behalf. He sits at the right hand of the Father as our High Priest, serving as the immutable point of contact that ensures we can never be truly adrift, regardless of how fierce the winds of life may blow.
Theological Tenant: The Doctrine of the Intercession of Christ. Because Jesus serves as our eternal High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary, our salvation is an objective, legal reality maintained by His presence before the Father, not by our performance on earth.
Discussion Questions:
How does the imagery of a "forerunner" boat changing your perspective on your daily struggle to "stay saved" or "stay close" to God?
If your anchor is already in the harbor, how should that impact the way you respond to the current "breakers" or storms in your life right now?
Closing Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank You for being my Forerunner. I praise You that You did not leave my security to my own strength, but that You have secured my soul in the presence of the Father. When the waves around me are high, help me to remember that my anchor is already in the harbor. Amen.
