Son of the Living God
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!” – Matthew 16:16 (HCSB)
In his bold confession at Caesarea Philippi, Peter not only declares Jesus to be the Messiah—he also calls Him the Son of the Living God. This phrase carries many implications. In contrast to the lifeless idols worshiped by surrounding nations, Israel's God is living, active, and eternal. To be His Son is to share in that divine life and authority.
The title Son of God appears multiple times in Matthew’s Gospel. At Jesus’ baptism in Matthew 3:17, the Father’s voice proclaims, “This is My beloved Son.” In Matthew 4:3, even Satan tests Jesus with the words, “If You are the Son of God…” And at the cross, in Matthew 27:54, a Roman centurion echoes Peter’s confession: “Truly this man was the Son of God!” Yet here in Matthew 16:16, Peter adds a vital detail—He is the Son of the living God.
This distinction is critical. Jesus is not the son of a distant deity or philosophical concept. He is the Son of the active, present, miracle-working God of Israel, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. His Sonship is not metaphorical or symbolic. It is essential to His identity and central to His mission.
To call Jesus Son of the Living God is to recognize His divine nature and perfect union with the Father. It is to acknowledge that through Him, the life of God has entered our world. And it is to believe that in Him, we too may have life full, eternal, and unshakable.
Reflect: Today, dwell on the fact that your God is alive. How does that change your struggle right now.
Prayer: Son of the Living God, I believe in who You are—not only as the promised Christ, but as the very Son of the eternal Father. You are the source of life, the revealer of truth, and the One in whom I place my hope. Breathe Your life into me today. Amen.
Jesus came to "set the captives free," by the Truth.
