Son of the King

“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son.” – Matthew 22:2 (HCSB)
In this parable, Jesus describes the kingdom of heaven as a king preparing a wedding banquet for his son—but it's a profound self-reference. Though He doesn’t name Himself directly, Jesus is clearly the Son of the King, the honored guest at the center of the Father’s eternal celebration. The banquet imagery recalls the covenant joy that God intends for His people, and the Son is the reason for the rejoicing.
The identity of Jesus as the royal Son runs throughout Matthew. In Matthew 3:17, the Father declares at Jesus’ baptism, “This is My beloved Son.” In Matthew 17:5, at the Transfiguration, He repeats this affirmation. But here, in the context of a parable, Jesus invites us to see not only His identity but our response. The King has sent invitations—not to strangers only, but to those who should have known better—and many refused to come.
To reject the Son is to dishonor the King. The parable warns that treating the Son lightly has eternal consequences, but it also extends hope. The King opens the doors to others, calling in all who will come to celebrate His Son. This is grace—the King wants a full house for His Son’s glory.
When you call Jesus Son of the King, you are acknowledging His royal status in the Father’s house. You are not simply invited to follow—you are invited to rejoice, to honor, to celebrate. And one day, you will sit at the wedding supper of the Lamb.
Reflect: How does it affect you to realize we are co-heirs with The Son of the King!
Prayer: Son of the King, I honor You today with joyful awe. You are the reason the feast has been prepared, and You are the joy of the Father’s heart. Thank You for inviting me to Your table. Make me ready, clothed in grace, to celebrate Your kingdom forever. Amen.
Jesus came to "set the captives free," by the Truth.
Do you know Jesus yet?
