Son of Abraham

The historical record of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham: – Matthew 1:1 (HCSB)
Before Jesus ever preached a sermon or healed the sick, Matthew identified Him with two monumental names—Son of David and Son of Abraham. While the first ties Jesus to royal authority, the second connects Him to covenantal promise. As the Son of Abraham, Jesus stands as the fulfillment of God’s original promise to bless the nations through Abraham’s offspring (Genesis 12:3).
The phrase “Son of Abraham” appears rarely in the New Testament, but when it does, it signals deep theological roots. In Luke 1:73, Zechariah praises God for remembering "the oath that He swore to our father Abraham." In Galatians 3:16, Paul explains that the promise was made not to many, but to one seed, that is, Christ Jesus. And here in Matthew 1:1, the gospel opens with Jesus as the heir to that promise.
To be called the Son of Abraham means Jesus is not only Jewish by lineage but is the appointed vehicle of global redemption. Abraham’s story was never meant to end with ethnic Israel; it was always a doorway to the nations. Jesus, born of Abraham’s line, becomes the Savior of both Jew and Gentile.
When we call on the name Son of Abraham, we remember that God keeps His promises across generations. We affirm that our salvation is rooted in a plan older than history and more gracious than we deserve. The God who called Abraham by name has now called us through Christ, His Son.
Reflect: How does it comfort you to realize you are part of an indescribable, unstoppable glory in Christ? You are victorious in Jesus Christ!
Prayer: Son of Abraham, You are the fulfillment of every covenant and the hope of all peoples. You carried the promise through the centuries and brought it to life in Your own flesh. Thank You for including me in the blessing first spoken to Abraham. Make me a vessel of that promise to others. Amen.
