"Then a voice from heaven said, 'This is My beloved Son. I take delight in Him!'" – Matthew 3:17 (HCSB)

As Jesus came up from the waters of baptism, the heavens opened, the Spirit descended like a dove, and a voice thundered from above. It was not a prophet or angel who spoke—it was the Father Himself. And He spoke not to the crowds, but directly to Jesus: “This is My beloved Son.” In that one divine declaration, Jesus was identified as both eternally begotten and personally loved.

The phrase “My Son” (ho huios mou in Greek) is rich with Old Testament echoes. It recalls Psalm 2:7—"You are My Son; today I have become Your Father”which is a messianic coronation verse. It also draws from Isaiah’s Suffering Servant, in whom the Lord delights. The Father’s words affirm both Jesus’ divine identity and His readiness to carry out the mission of redemption.

This wasn’t a private endorsement, but it a public anointing. Before Jesus preached a sermon or healed the sick, before He endured temptation or faced rejection, He stood in the waters of obedience, and the Father said, “You are Mine.” That identity would sustain Him through wilderness trials, opposition, and even the cross. It is no small thing to be called “Son” by the living God.

And this is the wonder of grace: through Christ, we are invited into that sonship. We are not divine as He is, but we are adopted through Him. The name My Son reminds us of who He is in essence and who we become by faith. It marks Jesus as worthy of all honor—and reminds us that we are chosen, loved, and called.

Reflect:

How does Jesus title, "son" give you hope today as a son or daughter of God?

Prayer: Father, I praise You for revealing Jesus as Your beloved Son. In Him, I see Your heart, Your delight, and Your plan. Thank You for declaring His identity so clearly and for inviting me into Your family through Him. Let me live as one who knows who Jesus is and who I am in Him. Amen.

Jesus came to "set the captives free," by the Truth.

Do you know Jesus yet?

Pray and ask Him to deliver you! He will.
