King of the Jews
"After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, wise men from the east arrived unexpectedly in Jerusalem, saying, 'Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.'" – Matthew 2:1–2 (HCSB)
Before Jesus had spoken a single word or performed a single miracle, He was already being called King of the Jews. This title, spoken by Gentile magi from the east, was more than a political reference—it was a recognition of divine authority and fulfillment of prophecy. The Greek term used here, basileus tōn Ioudaiōn, highlights not only His royal lineage through David but His divine appointment as ruler over God’s covenant people.
The irony is striking. While Herod, the political king, was trembling in fear, foreigners were bowing in worship. The one born in a lowly stable was already commanding honor greater than any earthly throne could provide. In calling Him King of the Jews, the wise men were acknowledging that this child was no ordinary heir. He was the long-awaited Messiah who would shepherd His people in righteousness and justice.
But Jesus would redefine kingship. He would not wear a crown of gold but one of thorns. He would not rule by sword, but by sacrifice. At His birth, He was hailed as King; at His death, the same title would be nailed above His head in mockery. Yet both proclamations were true. From the cradle to the cross to the crown of glory, Jesus is the eternal King of all.
When you call Him King of the Jews, you’re recognizing the fulfillment of God’s covenant, the embodiment of divine kingship, and the one to whom all allegiance belongs. He is not just King by birth—He is King by right, by redemption, and by resurrection.
