Going to God with Thanksgiving

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Thanksgiving isn’t just something we celebrate once a year. It’s a spiritual discipline, a posture of the heart, and a powerful weapon against despair, bitterness, and self-pity. It doesn’t mean pretending everything is okay—it means recognizing that God is good even when things aren’t.
The Bible doesn’t say give thanks for all circumstances. It says give thanks in all circumstances. That’s a critical difference. We don’t thank God for pain or injustice or loss. But we do thank Him that He’s still God in the middle of those things. We thank Him for His presence, His promises, and His power to redeem anything.
Count your blessings, name them one by one...
Thanksgiving shifts our focus. It pulls us out of the spiral of what we lack and lifts our eyes to what we’ve been given. It moves us from complaint to confidence, from striving to surrender. And the more we practice it, the more it changes us.
Paul wrote those words in 1 Thessalonians not from comfort, but from trial. Gratitude wasn’t his mood—it was his mindset. He knew that thanking God wasn’t a response to things going right; it was a declaration of faith that God was still at work.
So today, whether your heart is full or fractured, go to God with thanksgiving. Not out of obligation—but because gratitude leads you back into His presence. And in His presence, there is always enough.
Selah:
What ways can you show thanksgiving right now?
Prayer: Father, thank You. Not just for what You’ve given, but for who You are. Thank You that You are faithful, generous, and near. Teach me to give thanks in every circumstance—not because life is always good, but because You are. Let my gratitude be a testimony of trust. In Jesus’ name, amen.
