Do Not Go Beyond What Is Written

Updated: Jul 12

1 Corinthians 4:6 (HCSB)

“…so that you may learn from us the saying: ‘Nothing beyond what is written.’ The purpose is that none of you will be inflated with pride in favor of one person over another.”

In this world of opinions, philosophies, and spiritual noise, it’s tempting to add to Scripture—to chase new revelations, elevate personal insights, or prioritize tradition and personality over God’s revealed truth. But Paul gives us a strong guardrail: Don’t go beyond what is written.

God’s Word is complete. It’s not lacking depth, relevance, or power. When we start leaning on ideas that go beyond what God has spoken, we step into dangerous territory—where pride, division, and error thrive. But when we stay grounded in Scripture, we stay anchored in truth.

This isn’t about limiting God—it’s about honoring what He has already said. When you build your life on His Word, you don’t need to chase trends. You’ll have what you need: clarity, conviction, and confidence that you’re standing on something eternal.

Selah:

  1. Where are you tempted to add human ideas or expectations to what God’s Word says?

  2. How can you stay anchored in Scripture when the culture or church pushes beyond it?

Heart to Heart: Lord, keep me from wandering beyond what You’ve written. Guard my heart from pride, and my ears from voices that contradict Your truth. Help me stay grounded in Scripture, humble in spirit, and bold in truth. Thank you father, Amen.
