But so you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins…”—then He told the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your mat, and go home.” – Matthew 9:6 (HCSB)
Of all the titles Jesus used for Himself, Son of Man is the most frequent; especially in the Gospel of Matthew, where it appears over 25 times. This phrase, drawn from Daniel 7:13–14, refers to a heavenly figure who is given everlasting dominion and glory by the Ancient of Days. Yet Jesus uses it in contexts not only of authority, but also of suffering and humility.
In Matthew 8:20, Jesus says, “The Son of Man has no place to lay His head.” In Matthew 12:40, He connects it to His death and resurrection: “The Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.” And in Matthew 25:31, He speaks of His return: “The Son of Man will come in His glory, and all the angels with Him.” The title holds tension because it speaks of divine power and incarnate vulnerability.
By calling Himself Son of Man, Jesus simultaneously identifies with humanity and reveals His heavenly authority. He is the One who forgives sins, suffers in our place, and will one day judge the world. No other name so fully captures both His divinity and His humanity.
To call on the name Son of Man is to embrace the mystery of the Incarnation. He walked among us, not merely as God cloaked in flesh, but as the true and perfect Man. He bore our weaknesses, endured our temptations, and now reigns with eternal dominion.
Prayer:
Son of Man, You came in humility and will return in glory. You know my pain, my needs, and my heart. Thank You for identifying with me so fully, yet remaining sovereign over all. I trust You not only as my Savior, but as my Judge and King. Amen.
