Here is My Servant whom I have chosen, My Beloved in whom My soul delights; I will put My Spirit on Him, and He will proclaim justice to the nations. – Matthew 12:18 (HCSB)
Jesus is called Servant in fulfillment of the prophecy from Isaiah 42:1–4, which Matthew quotes in this passage. The word used here, pais in Greek, can mean both “child” and “servant,” and it highlights the deep intimacy and commission of the one being spoken about. Jesus is not a servant by compulsion but by divine calling–and the Father delights in Him.
This identity as Servant wasn’t just a title, it defined Jesus’ posture. In Philippians 2:7, Paul says Jesus “emptied Himself by assuming the form of a servant.” In Acts 3:13, Peter preaches that “the God of our fathers has glorified His Servant Jesus.” And in Isaiah 53, the Servant is described as one who suffers, bears the sins of many, and is crushed for our iniquities.
Jesus, the rightful King, chose the path of the Servant. He washed feet, welcomed outcasts, bore burdens, and laid down His life. His servanthood wasn't a weakness either. It was strength under submission, love made visible. He didn’t come to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many (Matthew 20:28).
To call on the name Servant is to honor the humility of our Redeemer. It’s to recognize that greatness in the kingdom comes not through power, but through self-giving love. And it’s to accept the invitation to follow His example–serving others in His name and for His glory.
Prayer: Servant of the Lord, You humbled Yourself to rescue me. You loved without limits, gave without measure, and served without hesitation. Teach me to follow in Your steps. Let my life reflect the heart of Your service–humble, faithful, and full of grace. Amen.
