Prophet

So they were offended by Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his household.” – Matthew 13:57 (HCSB)

When Jesus referred to Himself as a Prophet, He wasn’t making a minor claim. Prophets in Israel were God’s spokesmen. They declared divine truth, often at great personal cost. Jesus, speaking in His hometown of Nazareth, reminds the people of a familiar reality: Prophets are rarely honored by those who think they know them best.

This wasn't the only time Jesus was identified as a prophet. In Matthew 21:11, the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.” In Luke 24:19, the disciples on the road to Emmaus call Him “a prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people.” Even in rejection, the people could not deny His prophetic power because His words pierced, convicted, and revealed.

But Jesus was more than just another prophet in the line of Moses or Elijah. He was the fulfillment of Deuteronomy 18:15, where God promised to raise up a prophet like Moses from among the people. As Prophet, Jesus did not merely deliver a message, He was the message. He embodied truth, judgment, mercy, and divine authority.

To call on Jesus as Prophet is to welcome the voice of God into your life. It’s to say, “Speak, Lord—whatever You reveal, I will hear.” It means you are ready to be convicted, corrected, and called. And it reminds us that Jesus still speaks through His Word, by His Spirit, and through His people.

Prayer: Prophet of God, speak into the silence of my life. Let Your Word confront my assumptions, correct my paths, and call me into obedience. I do not want to merely admire Your message, I want to live it. Thank You for being the voice of God to me. Amen.
