“She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” – Matthew 1:21 (HCSB)

Before Jesus was born, His name was chosen by heaven: JesusYeshua in Hebrew, meaning “Yahweh saves.” The angel’s explanation makes the purpose clear: “He will save His people from their sins.” From the very beginning, Jesus was appointed as the Deliverer, not from Rome, poverty, or sickness alone, but from the deepest bondage of all—sin.

Though the term deliverer is not explicitly used in this verse, the meaning is unmistakable. To “save” in the biblical sense means to rescue, redeem, and deliver from peril. This theme echoes across Scripture too. In Romans 11:26, Paul quotes Isaiah: “The Deliverer will come from Zion.” In Luke 4:18, Jesus applies Isaiah 61 to Himself: “He has sent Me to proclaim freedom to the captives.” And in Colossians 1:13, Paul says that God “has rescued us from the domain of darkness.”

Jesus came not merely to teach or inspire—He came to break chains. Every healing, every exorcism, every forgiveness was an act of divine deliverance. And His ultimate act—the cross—was the rescue mission of eternity. He went into death so we could come out of it.

To call Jesus Deliverer is to admit that we cannot save ourselves. It is to cry out from our bondage and believe that He not only hears but has the power to set us free. It is to rejoice in the One who comes for us, time and time again.

Reflect: How does knowing Jesus is your deliverer affect your suffering?

Prayer: Deliverer, thank You for coming to rescue me from what I could never escape alone. You save completely and permanently. Thank You for bearing my chains and breaking their power. Deliver me again today—from fear, from sin, from lies—and lead me in freedom and truth. Amen.

Jesus came to "set the captives free," by the Truth.

Do you know Jesus yet?

Pray and ask Him to deliver you! He will.
