Proverbs 16:28 says,"A contrary person spreads conflict, and a gossip separates close friends."
Gossip destroys relationships. It erodes trust, spreads suspicion, and fractures unity in ways that are hard to repair. Proverbs doesn’t sugarcoat it: gossip causes division. And while it may feel like harmless venting or juicy sharing, it’s spiritual sabotage dressed in casual conversation.
At the root of gossip is a desire for power—to feel important, included, or in control. But the cost is always high. You may win attention for a moment, but you’ll lose credibility in the long run. People who gossip to you will gossip about you. And if you let it live in your relationships, it will leave nothing but wreckage.
Jesus never gossiped–don’t do it!
He didn’t traffic in rumors, half-truths, or character assassination. He dealt with people directly, with truth and compassion. He confronted sin when needed, but always with the person—not behind their back.
It is difficult, but zip your lips when the conversation turns toward someone who’s not in the room. Be the kind of person who shuts gossip down, not someone who keeps it going. Protect reputations. Guard unity. Speak life.
Reflection Questions:
Have I allowed gossip to creep into my conversations—and what impact has it had?
How can I practice guarding others’ reputations, even in private conversations?
Prayer: Lord, set a guard over my mouth. Help me resist the urge to gossip and instead use my words to build others up. Make me more like Christ—truthful, trustworthy, and loyal in every conversation. Let me reflect your character in every situation. Amen.
Think about it today while you walk in his love and share His grace!
