Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone? This came from the Lord and is wonderful in our eyes.” – Matthew 21:42 (HCSB)

In this confrontation with the chief priests and Pharisees, Jesus quotes directly from Psalm 118:22–23, identifying Himself as the Cornerstone—the foundational stone set in place by God, not man. It was a stunning claim. The builders—Israel’s religious elite—had rejected Him, yet God had appointed Him as the very stone upon which His eternal kingdom would be built.
In ancient construction, the cornerstone was not decorative—it was essential. It determined the placement, alignment, and integrity of the entire structure. To reject the cornerstone was to doom the building from the start. In Acts 4:11, Peter applies the same Scripture, declaring to the Sanhedrin that Jesus is “the stone rejected by you builders,” now raised as the immovable base of God’s redemptive plan. Paul echoes this in Ephesians 2:20, teaching that the Church is “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone.” And in 1 Peter 2:6–7, believers are called to rest their lives on Him who was once rejected but now reigns.
Jesus is the alignment point for all truth, righteousness, and life. The world may still build on sand—on power, pride, or performance—but those foundations will crumble. Only one stone has been tested, chosen, and set in place by God Himself. And that Stone is Christ.
To call Jesus the Cornerstone is to reject every false foundation and build wholly upon Him. He must determine the shape of our lives—our beliefs, decisions, and direction. What was once rejected has now become wonderful in our eyes, and our very lives depend on Him.
Pause and reflect:
Is Jesus christ the Cornerstone of my life?
Prayer: Cornerstone of heaven and earth, You are the foundation I need. Though the world rejected You, You are precious to the Father and to me. Keep me aligned with Your truth. Let everything I build—my faith, my family, my future—rest securely on You. May I never forget that You alone hold it all together. Amen.
