Bridegroom
Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests be sad while the groom is with them? The time will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.” – Matthew 9:15 (HCSB)
Jesus calls Himself the Bridegroom in a conversation about fasting. The Pharisees questioned why His disciples weren’t fasting like others, and Jesus responded with a wedding metaphor the religious elite would have recognized. In Jewish tradition, the arrival of the bridegroom marked a time of joy, not mourning. By using this title, Jesus was declaring that the long-awaited celebration of God’s kingdom had arrived—with Him at the center.
The image of God as a bridegroom was already deeply embedded in Old Testament prophecy. In Isaiah 62:5, the Lord says, “As a groom rejoices over his bride, so your God will rejoice over you.” In John 3:29, John the Baptist also refers to Jesus as the Bridegroom, saying, “The bridegroom is the one who has the bride.” And in Revelation 19:7, we’re told the “marriage of the Lamb has come,” tying Jesus' identity as Bridegroom to the Church’s final union with Him.
Jesus isn’t just the Redeemer—He’s the One who rejoices over His people like a groom over his bride. His love is not cold or contractual. It is passionate, personal, and covenantal. His coming was not just about redemption—it was about relationship. His disciples weren’t fasting because they were with the One who brings joy, intimacy, and a promise of eternal union.
When you call Jesus Bridegroom, you are embracing His invitation to belonging. You are not merely saved; you are wanted. You are not merely accepted; you are cherished. He prepares His bride in righteousness and beauty—and one day, He will return to take her home.
Prayer: Bridegroom of my soul, thank You for loving me with relentless, covenant love. You are not distant or cold—you have come near with joy, calling me into intimacy and celebration. Prepare me for the day when You return. Keep my heart faithful and ready. Amen.
