A voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son. I take delight in Him. Listen to Him!” – Matthew 17:5 (HCSB)

On the Mount of Transfiguration, as Jesus stands radiant with heavenly glory, the Father’s voice cuts through the cloud: “This is My beloved Son.” It is the second time in Matthew’s Gospel that God publicly affirms Jesus in this way—the first was at His baptism (Matthew 3:17), and here, at a moment of revelation, it is spoken again with greater urgency: “Listen to Him!”

The Greek word for beloved, agapētos, denotes more than affection. It carries the weight of deepest favor, eternal relationship, and divine unity. This Son is not only loved—He is uniquely loved, eternally begotten, and perfectly pleasing to the Father. In Ephesians 1:6, Paul refers to Christ as “the Beloved,” through whom grace has been freely given. And in Colossians 1:13, believers are transferred into “the kingdom of the Son He loves.”

The Transfiguration revealed more than Jesus’ divine nature. It revealed the divine pleasure of the Father and in commanding the disciples to “listen to Him,” God was placing Jesus above the Law and the Prophets, represented by Moses and Elijah. The beloved Son is now the final and ultimate Word.

To call Jesus Beloved Son is to worship the One who is the eternal delight of the Father and the perfect expression of His will. It’s to stand in awe of the One who radiates glory yet draws near in love. And it reminds us that because of Him, we too can be called beloved.

Prayer: Beloved Son, I listen to You with reverence and joy. You are the delight of the Father and the radiance of His glory. Thank You for revealing the heart of God to me. Teach me to hear Your voice, follow Your Word, and live in the love You have shared with me. Amen.
