So the disciples came and woke Him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to die!” – Matthew 8:25 (HCSB)
When the storm threatened to swallow their boat, the disciples cried out with urgency: “Lord, save us!” In that moment of desperation, they didn’t call Him “Teacher” or “Prophet.” They called Him Lord—Kyrios in Greek—a title that, in the Septuagint (Greek Old Testament), translates the divine name Yahweh. It signifies sovereignty, authority, and divinity.
The name Lord is used frequently in the Gospels and the early church to express both reverence and recognition. In Matthew 7:21, Jesus warns that not everyone who says “Lord, Lord” will enter the kingdom, pressing His hearers to acknowledge His lordship with obedience. In Matthew 14:28–30, Peter calls Him “Lord” when stepping out on the water. And in Luke 5:8, Peter falls before Him and says, “Go away from me, because I’m a sinful man, Lord!”
To call Jesus Lord is to confess more than respect—it is to acknowledge His supreme authority over creation, over history, and over you. The disciples didn’t fully grasp His identity yet, but in their panic, they cried to the right Person. The sea obeyed Him. The winds bowed before Him. This was no mere rabbi—this was the Lord of heaven and earth.
When you call on the name Lord, you surrender. You stop commanding and start trusting. You lay down your tools and your plans and place your life in His sovereign hands. Jesus is not only Savior—He is Lord. And His lordship brings peace to every storm.
Reflect: In what ways might you move closer to Christ today through confession and repentance or through abstinence? Is it comforting to know Christ is Lord?
Prayer: Lord, I confess You are sovereign over all things—over the wind, the waves, and the worries of my heart. You are not distant, but near. You rule with power and love. Teach me to call on Your name not only in fear, but in faith. Let my life reflect Your authority and my heart rest in Your lordship. Amen.
