“But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God.” (Hebrews 10:12)
“It is finished.” (John 19:30)

Under the old covenant, sacrifice was constant. Day after day, year after year, blood was shed, yet the work was never complete. Those sacrifices could point to forgiveness, but they could not perfect the conscience or remove sin’s power. They served as reminders that something more was needed. Humanity needed not another offering, but a final one.

Jesus came to do what no sacrifice before Him could accomplish. He did not cover sin temporarily. He dealt with it decisively. On the cross, He offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice, fully satisfying the justice of God. When He declared, “It is finished,” He was not speaking of exhaustion, but of completion. The debt was paid in full. Judgment was satisfied. Reconciliation was secured.

The significance of Christ sitting down at the right hand of God cannot be overstated. Priests stood because their work was never finished; their works did not complete salvation because the blood of animals does not cover sinful humanity. Jesus, however, sat because nothing remained. There is no further sacrifice to be made, no additional payment required, no hidden condition left unmet. His blood did not postpone judgment; it absorbed it. The wrath you deserved was poured out on Him so that mercy could be poured out on you.

This truth changes how you relate to God. You no longer strive for acceptance or carry guilt He already bore. You are not forgiven in stages or on probation. You are forgiven fully and forever because Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient. Your standing before God does not rest on your consistency, but on Christ’s completion. The sacrifice has been made once for all, and it will never need to be repeated.

Prayer: A Prayer of Rest in the Finished Work of Christ

Jesus, Thank You for being the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world, including my own. I rest in Your finished work. I release every effort to prove my worth or earn Your love. You paid it all. Teach me to live in the peace and confidence that flow from knowing the sacrifice was fully sufficient. Let my life be a response of gratitude and worship to Your grace.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
