The Purpose of the Law

Galatians 3:19-25 (HCSB) — "Why then was the law given? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise was made would come. The law was put into effect through angels by means of a mediator. Now a mediator is not for just one person, but God is one. Is the law therefore contrary to God’s promises? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that was able to give life, then righteousness would certainly be by the law. But the Scripture has imprisoned everything under sin’s power, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. Before this faith came, we were confined under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith was revealed. The law, then, was our guardian until Christ, so that we could be justified by faith. But since that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus."

Opening: If the Law cannot save, why give it? It was a fence, not a foundation. A wall, not the walk. The fence defines the boundaries and the danger; it is not the home. A wall also separates. (Ephesians 2.14)

  • Historical Note: The Law was a paidagōgos. In a Roman household, this was a strict disciplinarian (often a slave) who guarded a child and used a rod to keep them from trouble.

  • Linguistic Note: Paul says we were "confined" (phroureō) under the Law—a military term meaning "kept under guard" or in protective custody.

  • Systemic Collapse: The Law didn't make us righteous; it simply made sure we knew we were unrighteous. It hemmed us in so that we would know why we needed Christ.

The Reality: You cannot be a fruitful heir if you are still obsessed with the "Rod" of the guardian. The Sanctifier doesn't use the Law to beat you into submission; He uses the Freedom of Christ to draw you into love.

Resolve to Rest in your standing in Christ. Today, acknowledge that the “wall” has done its job–it led you to Christ. Now that Faith has come, you are no longer under the guardian.

Father, forgive me for trying to save myself. The Law has taught me I must be perfect if I am to save myself, but I am not perfect and need Christ. Thank you for this grace. Let me live all my days trusting in your perfect provision. In Jesus Name, Amen.
