But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him." — Luke 15:20
He had everything—his father's provision, a place at the table, and the security of home. But it wasn't enough. The younger son demanded his inheritance early, effectively wishing his father dead, and set off for a distant country. There, he wasted it all—money, dignity, relationships—in reckless living. When the famine came, so did reality. He found himself feeding pigs, starving, empty, alone. Rock bottom didn’t just humble him—it broke him open. In that pit, he remembered home. He rehearsed a speech of repentance, willing to return not as a son, but as a servant.
But the father had been watching the road. The moment he saw his son coming—still far off, still filthy—he ran. Not with judgment, but with joy. He didn’t wait for the speech. He wrapped his son in an embrace and restored him with a robe, a ring, and a feast. The father didn’t just forgive; he celebrated. That’s the heart of God—ready to redeem, even before we finish our apologies. The prodigal’s story isn’t just about failure. It’s about the overwhelming welcome of a Father who never stopped waiting.
Maybe you’ve wandered—through choices, rebellion, addiction, or a slow drift from the heart of God. Maybe you wonder if it’s too late or if you’ve gone too far. But the road home is still open. The Father hasn’t changed. He’s still watching. He’s still waiting. You don’t have to earn your way back. Just turn your face toward home. The grace you fear may not be there is already running to meet you.
If you’re lost in guilt or living far from the life you were meant for, know this: the Father is not mad—He misses you. His arms are open. The table is still set. And your place as His child is not revoked—it’s waiting to be restored.
Pray:
Father, thank You for loving me when I wander. Thank You for watching the road and running toward me when I come home. Forgive me for the times I’ve squandered what You’ve given and chased lesser things. Today, I return. Restore my heart. Remind me who I am. And let me live from the joy of being Your child. In Jesus’ name, amen.
