Galatians 3:15-18 (HCSB) — "Brothers, I’m using a human illustration. No one sets aside or makes additions to even a human covenant that has been ratified. 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say “and to seeds,” as though referring to many, but referring to one, and to your seed, who is Christ. 17 And I say this: The law, which came 430 years later, does not revoke a covenant that was previously ratified by God and cancel the promise."
Opening: The signatures on a deed carry the weight of its contents. You cannot come along centuries later and add "fine print" that cancels the original agreement–especially when God is the Author. The original promise continues the agreement. This is the entire principle behind what The Spirit is teaching here: The Promise made to Abraham is being fulfilled in us by faith in Christ.
Legal Note: Paul uses the word diathēkē (covenant/will). In Roman and Jewish law, once a covenant was ratified, no one could set it aside or add new conditions.
Historical Context: The Law came 430 years after the Promise. It cannot "annul" the original Deed.
Linguistic Note: God "graciously gave" (kecharistai) the inheritance to Abraham. The verb is in the Perfect Tense, signaling a permanent reality.
The Reality: Your standing is based on God’s Promise AND God’s Performance. The "fine print" of the flesh—that you have to maintain certain standards to be loved—is legally invalid based on God’s character, words and actions.
Resolve to Rest in God’s promise. Today, when your heart tries to add "conditions" to your standing, go back to the Deed. The Promise was made. The land is yours.
Father, I live by faith in your completed works and what you say about me. I am forever yours because you says so, not because I am working, but resting in you. Comfort me now. May I sense your presence as I sit with you right now. I love you Lord. Amen.
