The Elect

For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. (Ephesians 1:4) Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. (Colossians 3:12)

To be among the elect is to be chosen by God, not because of merit or effort, but because of His mercy and divine will. It’s a humbling truth: before you ever sought Him, He set His love upon you. This selection occurred before the foundation of the world, highlighting that your relationship with God began with His initiative rather than your own performance or worthiness.

Election isn’t about exclusion—it’s about grace. It reminds us that salvation isn’t something we earn, but a gift we receive from a Sovereign Creator. Those whom God calls, He also transforms; the gift of being chosen carries with it the power to change. The elect are not just saved from a past—they’re set apart for a future, called to walk in holiness, humility, and active service to others.

Rather than leading to pride, this truth should stir a deep sense of awe and responsibility within our hearts. You are chosen—not just to be saved, but to shine as a light in a dark world. Your life is not an accident; it is an intentional part of God’s redemptive plan for humanity. To live as the elect is to live as one who is marked by grace and called by name into a higher purpose.

As you move through your day, remember that you carry the identity of a chosen child of God. This identity serves as an anchor, steadying you when you feel weary or wounded by the world's demands. Because you are dearly loved, you are empowered to "clothe" yourself in the virtues of Christ—compassion, kindness, and patience—extending the same grace to others that God has so freely extended to you.

Theological Tenet at Play: Unconditional Election The devotional is rooted in the doctrine of Unconditional Election. This tenet teaches that God’s choice of certain individuals for salvation is based entirely on His sovereign good pleasure and mercy, not on any foreseen merit, faith, or good works performed by the individual. He accepted you as elect because you accept Him as Savior.

Discussion Questions

  1. How does knowing that God chose you "before the creation of the world" change the way you view your security in Him when you are struggling with sin or doubt?

  2. If being chosen is intended to produce humility and service rather than pride, what specific "garment" (compassion, kindness, or patience) do you need to put on today for the people in your life?

Gratitude for Being Chosen Sovereign God, Thank You for choosing me—not because of who I am, but because of who You are. Your mercy humbles me, and Your grace sustains me.

Help me to walk worthy of this calling—not in pride, but in purpose. Use my life to reflect Your glory. I am chosen, loved, and called—may I never take that lightly.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
