“We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” — Hebrews 2:1

Drifting is a passive movement. You do not have to work to drift; you simply have to do nothing. In the spiritual life, the currents of culture, fleshly desires, and worldly anxieties are constant, and they are always moving away from the finished work of Christ. If you are not actively tethered to the Word, you will find yourself miles away from your point of certainty without ever having made a conscious decision to leave.

To "pay the most careful attention" means to treat the Gospel as an objective compass. It requires a daily, deliberate focus on the external truths of Scripture rather than the internal whispers of our emotions. When we stop preaching the Gospel to ourselves, we begin to listen to the "weather" of our feelings. We begin to think we are secure when we feel good and lost when we feel bad, which is the very definition of being adrift.

Stability is maintained by focus. A sailor in a storm does not find his bearings by looking at the waves hitting the hull; he looks at a fixed point on the horizon or a compass that is unaffected by the motion of the boat. Our "fixed point" is the objective truth of what God has said about us in His Word. We should pay attention to the truth lest we lose sight of that point, the natural current of our own hearts will always pull us back toward a performance-based, anxious existence.

Theological Tenant: The Sufficiency of Scripture. The Word of God is the only objective standard for truth and the only reliable means by which a believer can maintain spiritual stability against the subjective currents of emotion and experience.

Discussion Questions:

  1. In what areas of your life have you noticed a "silent drift" where you’ve moved away from trusting God’s Word and started trusting your own feelings?

  2. What does "paying careful attention" to the Gospel look like for you practically on a Monday morning?

Closing Prayer: Father, forgive me for the times I have allowed the currents of this world to pull me away from the truth. Grant me the discipline to pay careful attention to Your Word so that I may remain tethered to the reality of who I am in Christ. Keep me from drifting. Amen.
