Here's a great reason to have hope in Christ today!

“A person with great anger bears the penalty; if you rescue him, you’ll have to do it again.” – Proverbs 19:19

Angry moments breed hurt and shame. They also invite God’s judgment upon the enraged and out-of-control. While anger is often excused for various reasons, it remains a sin deserving attention as the Holy Spirit reveals in Scripture.

There is hope for the angry–just as much hope as for every other person in Christ–and as always, it is key to renew our minds with the washing of the Word. (Ro.12.2) The Scriptures are transformative so take on some of these verses below and ask the Father to help you overcome anger by the power of the Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus Christ.

Learn what the Scriptures teach about anger and the practice you can apply to gain victory of anger whenever it attempts to flare.

God’s View of Anger

James 1:19–20 – “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for man’s anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness.”

Proverbs 29:11 – “A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man holds it in check.”

Ecclesiastes 7:9 – “Don’t let your spirit rush to be angry, for anger abides in the heart of fools.”

Anger Leads to Sin

Ephesians 4:26–27 – “Be angry and do not sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your anger, and don’t give the Devil an opportunity.”

Proverbs 14:17 – “A quick-tempered man acts foolishly, and a man who schemes is hated.”

Proverbs 19:19 – “A person with great anger bears the penalty; if you rescue him, you’ll have to do it again.”

Anger Damages Relationships

Proverbs 15:18 – “A hot-tempered man stirs up conflict, but one slow to anger calms strife.”

Proverbs 30:33 – “For the churning of milk produces butter, and twisting a nose draws blood, and stirring up anger produces strife.”

Proverbs 22:24–25 – “Don’t make friends with an angry person, and don’t be a companion of a hot-tempered one, or you will learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.”

Anger Invites Judgment

Matthew 5:21–22 – “You have heard that it was said… ‘Do not murder’… But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment.”

Galatians 5:19–21 – “…the works of the flesh are obvious… strife, outbursts of anger… those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Colossians 3:8 – “But now you must also put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth.”

Anger destroys wisdom and self-control

Proverbs 16:32 – “Patience is better than power, and controlling one’s temper, than capturing a city.”

Proverbs 25:28 – “A man who does not control his temper is like a city whose wall is broken down.”

James 1:19 – “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.”

Anger escalates conflict

Proverbs 15:1 – “A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath.”

Proverbs 26:21 – “As charcoal for embers and wood for fire, so is a quarrelsome person for kindling strife.”
